This is the final installment of four special features honoring the 2020 Florida Grower Citrus Achievement Award winner, Steven Callaham, CEO of the Dundee Citrus Growers Association.
What do you love about the Florida citrus industry?
Callaham: While I don’t grow the citrus myself, there are many facets I love about the citrus industry. One facet is working with growers — and working for a cooperative gives me the opportunity to interact with hundreds of growers. Getting out of the office and riding the groves is another. From bloom time, to fruit set, to harvesting, to packing, I love every part of the process.
Are there any mentors who have helped you along the way that you’d like to recognize?
Callaham: I have been very fortunate throughout my career to be surrounded by many great people who have had a positive impact on me. My objective has always been to listen more than talk, which has allowed me to learn so much. There is no substitution for experience. We should all take advantage of listening to those who have come before us and then pass along information to those who come after us.
Why will the citrus industry survive the greening challenge and other obstacles?
Callaham: The industry will survive because the people within it will not let it fail. Even if a cure for greening is never found, the industry will evolve and adapt around it. We are already seeing this in several areas. Our citrus under protective screen projects are a prime example.

Callaham: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Florida Grower magazine and UPL for recognizing me as the 2020 Citrus Achievement Award winner.
